Interview By: Jeremy Gislason Interview Date: 01-Nov-05
Q. Please tell us a little about your background. I was brought up on a golf course in Scotland, My father was Head Greenkeeper, and a had a handicap of 3. He was club champion 5 times. So I had golf in my veins from an early age.
I am a 9 handicap golfer at the age of 60.
At the age of 15, I ran away to sea, and joined the Royal Navy as a boy seaman. Worked my way up through the lowerdeck to become a Chief Technician. Finally took the plunge and became a R.N. Officer. Was sent to the Falklands War, and decided that getting shot at, was not for me, especially when I had a young family, and decided to leave the navy 3 years later.
Joined civilian life in 1985, and worked my way up to become a Technical Director of an Electrical Company in the UK.
Took early retirement in 2000, and started ny own Consultancy business.
My wife and I decided to move back to Scotland, where we are currently near the end of completing a self-build house, as our retirement home.
Q. What made you decide to start a website in the field? As I tend to get bored if I do not have a project to work on, I decided to find out more about the Internet as a hobby.
The Internet bug caught me, and I started a golf site, earlier this year, 2005.
Q. What kind of research went into this niche area before building your website? Several months of learning the hard way that a niche market is what the Internet is about. Providing good content about something you are passionate about.
Q. How did you design and build your website? Tried learning HTML etc., and built my own rough website.
Felt happier having a better looking and more professional website, plus the hosting is included, by going to Sitesell.
Q. What software do you use to run your business? Sitesell
Q. How does your website generate income? By selling a Golf ebook, and some affiliate books.
Looking to improve on this area, selling or using free ebooks from Surefirewealth.
Q. How do you collect payments for your products or services? Clickbank
Q. What promotion methods do you use? Used PPC, and paid for a list building service, which I send out emails to on a regular basis. Links to other sites. Writing articles Looking to improve this area
Q. Which method has proven to give you the best sales results? From the List
Q. Which method of traffic generation has proven to be the best for you? Buying a list, but article writing is now beginning to show some results.
Q. What is your biggest challenge each month? Updating website with fresh content.
Q. What's the biggest mistake you've made since starting your business? Lots. Procrastination- by reading bumf instead of getting on with it. Paying for rubbish ebooks, and lists that do not work.
Q. How has your lifestyle changed since you started your online business? Nothing startling yet, as I treat it as a hobby. If I took the time and treated the golf website as a business, then I probably would get somewhere!
Q. How has your SureFireWealth.com membership helped you with your online business? Not yet, about to use the facilities.
Q. What would you say to someone looking to start a website in the same niche as you? Enjoy doing it. Try to find a new angle.
