Godfather Marketing (The Nettle Magazine - Issue #41) By David Congreave
Best Issue Ever!, November 03, 2007
Reviewer: Lorie Therese Locara
This issue is probably the best The Nettle mag I’ve read so far. Two articles I’d like to focus on and really commend are the Godfather Marketing and the Viral URL articles.
I like the Godfather Marketing article a lot, because, indeed, who would have thought that the Godfather (the movie) would be a source of ethical marketing practice tips?
But deeper than that, I like the concept wherein Internet marketers are advised to actually give away stuff, to actually be generous. This is not a manipulative tactic, per se. Rather, this, to me, is an act of goodwill that natural law would actually encourage. Because, as many religions advocate, the more generous you are, the more the Universe would oblige and return the favors you gave away a hundred fold.
I think this is great advice because giving away stuff and services serve to ingratiate people to you, and actually make them want to partner with you. And I believe in doing this with sincerity, because people will pick up if you are being a fake; fakeness and being untrustworthy would only serve to scare potential partners and customers away.
The part on Viral URL is pretty timely for me, because I had taken to “decanting” or shortening my URLs lately, using URLtea. Though I like the part where you can choose the names or codes or words for your URL extensions, the examples given were longer, negating one of the purposes of URL cloaking.
I tried the ViralURL system, and it was good, because it actually hides the true URL, even after it had been clicked. As opposed to URLtea and tinyURL, when you click the URLs, by the time the page has loaded, the URL has reverted to its original string.
A bigger plus is that you actually earn from their system.
A timely thing, because I’ve been considering going on affiliate programs and getting a move on on my passive income generation.
I shall use their system!
So back to The Nettle.. Best issue ever!
And I can even overlook the formatting ugliness now. :p

Godfather Marketing (The Nettle Magazine - Issue #41) By David Congreave
Well-put together, November 04, 2007
This is quite a good issue of Nettle. Looking at the cover, the cover story looks appealing and thought-provoking, probably making one think: “Exactly what is godfather marketing?” The magazine answers this question immediately with the first article. The article delivers a unique and powerful message that Internet marketers may just consider applying in their business. The Godfather as an analogy is simple and illustrative, driving home the point. I wonder, though, why there is no author for this article. The cover story can also be spiced up further through photos – after all, it’s the cover story and should not only read well but also look good.
The other articles in this issue are informative as well. In the segment “The Nettle Magazine Recommends,” the merits of Viral URL were well-discussed. I also particularly like the short but I believe impactful article “How to Create a Super Evangelist” by Sean D’Souza. It shows you just how powerful word-of-mouth marketing can be and how you can maximize it to your advantage.

I always enjoy The Nettle, and this issue is no different. Its first few pages talks at great length about how helpful it is to build a good reputation, provide certain services for free, and overdeliver. Interestingly enough, that section takes its cue from The Godfather (yes, the movie). I just thought it was a particularly nice piece of writing.
This issue also provides information about cloaking affiliate links and also includes a contest in which you can win a DVD. If you've been remiss in following The Next Internet Millionaire, this issue also provides some (pretty scathing, at times) commentary on the past few episodes.
Overall, this was yet another satisfying issue, extremely entertaining to read. Take a break from running and planning your online ventures for a while and get this newsletter. It still touches on all things Internet marketing, but you'll have loads of fun catching up anyway.
