Leaving Microsoft to Change the World
Do you remember reading books as a child? What books did you enjoy reading? I enjoyed reading everything from history to mysteries to science fiction myself. I was also a big Dr. Suess fan when I was about 7 years old.
Living in the developed world we take it for granted that we can read pretty much whatever we want whenever we want. Just go down to the local library or bookstore. If you’re like me you probably have hundreds of books in your home library even.
Imagine how different your life would have been if you hadn’t had access to any books your entire childhood? Just think about that for a second…not one book…I bet your life would have been different as would have mine.
This is exactly what millions of children around the world in some of the poorest countries are experiencing every single day. However, one man named John Wood has been making a huge difference.
John discovered his passion, his greatest success, and his life’s work not at business school or helping to lead Microsoft’s change into Asia in the 1990’s but on a soul-searching trip to the Himalayas. He made the difficult decission to walk away from his lucrative career to create Room to Read, a nonprofit organization that promotes education across the developing world.

I love this book. The thing that inspired me most was his entrepreneurial, bottom line approach to making social change. If you ever get a chance to go hear him speak, jump at it. Great stuff!
