Happy New Year!
As we come into 2009, you may be looking back and 2008 and saying one of three things to yourself.
“What a fantastic year 2008 was!”… or “2008 could have been better for me…” or “2008 was the worst year of my entire life!”
Whatever you may be thinking about 2008 – it’s over and now time to start a new year and try to make it a great one! So, unless you want to be saying 1 year from now…”What the heck happened to me in 2009!?” You might want to start thinking more deeply…
So, what have you resolved to do this year?
If you’re like most people….New Year’s resolutions come and go. Depending on the survey or study you consult, around 50% of Americans make New Years Resolution and about 15% of them actually last more than a couple months. Not a very reliable means of getting something done is it?
But you are not like most people or you wouldn’t be reading this blog post right?
This year, instead of making resolutions that last no more than a couple days, consider a new strategy.
Here are Five Not So Typical Financial Resolutions…Be Careful as They May Change Your Life
…
1. Resolve to make a change when you need it and not to wait for a special day like New Years, next Monday, the first of the month or the second full moon in March, to make that change you know you need to make.
When you feel as if things aren’t working out the way you’d like them to, say for example you’d like to save more money, instead of saying to yourself – “I’ll save more money after I take that vacation” or “after the Super Bowl party”, or “after my car is paid off,” sit down immediately and make a plan to save more money.
Be specific with your goals. A random, “I’d like to save more money,” is a flimsy goal just begging to be forgotten. Instead, set a specific goal and a time you intend to attain your goal by. “I’d like to save $5,000 by April,” is much more specific.
Make it positive – we’re talking about a statement that implies success here. For example, “I’m going to save $5,000 by April.”
You also should Create a plan of action. How are you going to save $5,000 by April? It’s not going to magically happen. You’re not going to manifest $5,000 into your savings account – we’ll maybe you could manifest 5K but in my experience manifesting takes a bit more than willing or wanting, it takes action.
Don’t get me wrong here, I strongly believe in visualization and prayer to the angels and spirits above. But you can pray all day for the tea kettle to boil, yet until you turn on the fire it probably won’t boil. So what I’m saying is do a combination of visualising as well as taking action.
An interesting thing happend to me. I made a visualzation chart about 3 years ago by just cutting out pictures of things I wanted to see happen and writing down impact words under them etc. Well, last night I looked at it and I discovered that I’d accomplished about half of the things on the chart! I thought that was pretty amazing and am now making a new one to replace the goals I’ve already met.
I will be sure to do something each day towards making those a reality as well by taking action.
2. Resolve to take advantage of opportunities as they arise. Resolve to grab a hold of those little bits of inspiration as they pop into your head. There’s an old saying that money likes speed or success likes speed. It means that if you sit on an idea or an opportunity for too long – it goes away.
Don’t wait, don’t hesitate. If you are inspired to do something or an opportunity comes your way – take action. Too often people have brilliant ideas, often while they’re sitting in traffic, having a conversation with someone, first thing in the morning before they’re fully awake or heck I’ve even had them in the shower. So what happens to those ideas?
If you’re like most, you say “I’ll have to remember that idea.” Or “I wish I could write that down.” Or maybe you do write it down, right next to the other 100 great ideas you’ve had over the past year or so.
And what happens then?
Nothing.
You don’t take action. You don’t implement your idea or even begin researching its viability.
You know what inevitably happens to all those great ideas YOU had? A month, a year, or even several years later you come across someone who is making a ton of money with that very same idea. The difference is THEY took action.
Resolve right here, right now – TODAY – to take advantage of opportunities and ideas when they come to you. Don’t write them down and save them for later, begin exploring the possibilities to make that great idea a reality.
Too many people are afraid of failure or start talking themselves out of taking action on their ideas because they think of 101 ways it wouldn’t work. Well, you will never know until you tried right? I say it is better to try something and fail, then learn from that experience than to never have tried at all. Which brings us to number three on the list…
3. Another thing happens to some people who receive inspiration or are invited into opportunities – they let fear and doubt and a general lack of faith get in the way. Resolve to shove fear and doubt aside.
“The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure.”
- Sven Goran Eriksson
Fear has a great knack for getting in the way of success. It prevents us from even trying. The real question you have to ask yourself is – “What’s the worst that could happen?” And “Do I really care if I fail the first, second or even the third time?”
Most often, the thing we fear is really quite minimal when we compare it to the potential reward and let’s not forget the reward we feel for simply trying in the first place. Instead of letting fear talk you out of something, examine the risks, assess your fears, and then determine if it’s worth it. 9 times out of 10 it is.
But what about doubt? Doubt is actually a pretty ugly word – especially when what you doubt is your ability to succeed. You weren’t born with this doubt. It crept up on you as you were growing into adulthood.
Somewhere along the way you started doubting your abilities to do certain things. Perhaps it was something someone said to you or that you overheard or perhaps it was an experience you had, regardless the effect was the same. You began to doubt yourself.
Doubting yourself sucks. Don’t do it. Rather than letting doubt get in the way of even trying, why not simply plan for success, accept that you might fail and then try and see what happens?
Wonderful things happen when you let go of fear and doubt. Resolve to make decisions based on what you can do, not what you fear or doubt. The difference may sound small but it’s a huge change and the results will not just affect your bank account – they’ll change your life.
4. Resolve to look for opportunities. Open your eyes to the possibilities. When you set a goal or state an intention, quite often people succeed simply because they are now focused on the goal. Things they didn’t notice before are now all around them.
For example, if you state an intention like “I want to see a blue balloon today,” chances are you’re going to see a blue balloon. Not because it magically appeared but because you are now looking for blue balloons – you’ve become aware of them.
The same thing happens with other goals including financial goals or success goals. As soon as you’ve set your sights on the goal or intention, all sorts of opportunities and possibilities appear to help you attain your goal.
The trick is recognizing them and taking action. Resolve to look for opportunities to help you attain your goals. They’re there just waiting for you to notice.
Opportunites have a way of finding busy people – people who get things done rather than lazy people. Why? Maybe it is the law of the universe, or maybe it is karma or maybe it is just because people who take action and jump on a good opportunity when they see one will work harder at it than someone who just expects the world on a silver platter.
So keep your eyes open and when you get that chance, take it and run with it.
5. Resolve to let go. It’s funny but sometimes when we hold a goal too closely, when it becomes too important to us, it slips through our fingers. Set your goals, make your plans to achieve them, keep your eyes open for the possibilities and then let it go.
Let go of emotional attachment to the goal and enjoy the ride. When you’re able to enjoy the path, the effort, and the eventual success or failure, their really is no downside. And more often than not, when you’re able to let go of the need to succeed, of the emotional and almost physical longing for success, success follows. It’s one of those little secrets that we know but forget because we just get so tied up in the results.
So this year when someone asks you what your New Year’s Resolutions are, and you know they will, you can tell them that you resolve not to make any resolutions. You can tell them that you live your life embracing the present and always ready to make changes as the need arises. You can tell them that you resolve to let go of fear and doubt and need. You can tell them that you’re embracing a life that looks for opportunities and takes action.
Happy New Year!
To Your Success!

Happy New Year Jeremy.
Many thanks for these Financial Resolutions. I fully agree to these and I know in most cases only the “Take Action” step is missed. Many people see the opportunities but they bring nothing to move. In these times with so many new products every day many people hop on every new bandwagon instead to do his business.
Many thanks again

I am always looking out for new opportunities and don’t believe in chance meetings but can be terrible at letting go when I really need something!!!!
When I do the results are amazing and I have been able to think about something I need, forget that I asked for it and it shows up!
Its a great reminder because I want to attend a writers workshop in two weeks and have to let go and expect to be there because I am clinging a little
That’s my new years resolution for 2009. To finally print publish my book and I set the intention then a day later an email arrived about this great one day workshop for people looking to get their book published!
Happy New Year

Happy New Year Jeremy & SFW readers!
Good ideas as usual Jeremy.
My wife and I are qualified coaches, so your wise words definitely struck a chord with us!
Too often, people fail to take action on opportunities that they do see, or don’t make a plan to follow through once they decide on a goal.
I blogged about this only today.
Please see my URL above for the great story.
Not mine I hasten to add, so I can genuinely say it’s a fantastic story.
The essential lesson is: Take Action…. Now!
Here’s to a great 2009 everyone!

Thanks Jeremy and Happy New Year to you too!
I am glad I took the time to read this post. You have made alot of great points here. I haven’t made ay resolutions this year just for the fact that I change things as I need to. A couple years back I needed to lose weight but I didn’t wait for New Years I just simply found a way to do it. Now I help people lose weight and it is very rewarding for me. I am a Wellness Coach now so if any of your readers would like my help in losing weight then have them visit my website. http://www.mgsbodyslim.com. I will give them a free consultation for being a subscriber of yours. Thanks again for this post it was really great.

Probably, one thing i was doing last year was not running for some opportunities that i couldn’t invest in that time, then focusing to what I’m doing the best:Writing.Being able to make some lovely stories i got people’s attention, made a short list of subscribers by giving away my e-book,written on personal experience of self improvement-staying young.Yes,i did exactly you said:let it go!
Simply i gave myself to talking a nice life experience in hope someone reading it find own way to achieve my goal.
Something like getting one to love you-it can’t be forced, just let it go-to happened!
Wishing you Happy New Year!

This is what we all need a road map, and you have spelt it out in plain english.
very nice artical jeremy, happy new year to you and your family.

Hi Jeremy, Happy New Year to you and your readers. A few years I resolved not to make resolutions again because I just cannot stick to them and feel a failure when I give in.
My 2008 was a disaster, struggling with financial problems, I then injured my neck and back which put me out of work for 7 months and my financial problems got worse, not enough money to pay my essential bills. Unfortunately my debts still cling on to me but somehow I have scraped through but every month brings more bills.
Last April I had a brainwave which involves a tangible product which if marketed properly, I believe could set me up for life but because of my incapacity I couldn’t get it off the ground but reading your blog has fired me up again and I propose to set the wheels in motion again.
So thank you for the mild kick in the pants, your article is really common sense but external influences of everyday life sometimes tend to get in the way and ideas and motion get shifted further down the list.

Thanks for something a little different in ‘resolutions’, New
Year’s or otherwise!
If I can stick to these 2009 should be more than 2008 was.

Excellent information on New Year resolutions. I feel 2008 really hit home to alot of people and looking to make a HUGE comeback in 2009. There are tons of information on opportunities but it really comes down to who you trust.
Wishing You all a prosperous 2009!

Hi Jeremy,
Great approach to New Year’s resolutions! I agree with everything you wrote and I appreciate you taking the time to write this post. Now I just need to follow the advice you’ve suggested here. I’ve also made those goal posters like you described but I failed to follow through and map out how I was going to achieve those goals so I just have to put all of the pieces of the puzzle in place to make it work for me.
Thanks again for the post and for sharing this helpful and valuable information.
Happy New Year!

Thank you for a great post Jeremy.
This is all excellent advice and although the concepts are familiar to me, there is a big difference between knowing something and utilising that knowledge so your list is a timely reminder.
Taking action is an area I am now working on, but I have a tendency to do a bit of this, then a bit of that, which doesn’t achieve as much as I would like, so I also need to bring focus to my plans while still taking action.
I like your reminder to put fears and doubt aside. As you said, doubt is a real killer. We all have so much potential, but so many of us let doubt take away our natural confidence.
Best wishes to everyone for a successful 2009.

Thanks Jeremy. As always, wise and insightful thoughts from someone who has been there! The one thing I caught in all this, was one word you brought out, which nobody mentioned; and what my main website is based on: “faith”. Heb 11:1 says, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
The emphasis should be on the word “NOW”, which others alluded to as, “Don’t put off change.” And someone else said, “Do it NOW!”
Have a BLESSED year 2009!

Good one, Jeremy.
I particularly like the idea of the visualisation chart.

Thanks Jeremy. This hit home hard. In 2008 I have fabulous growth and success with my website and am so grateful every day that I have been able to take something like my bipolar disorder and make a living out if it – truly taking life’s lemons and making lemonade:) However, one huge goal for me has been to develop my own e-books and so far I just have NOT been able to knuckle down and get it done. I tell myself my issues are about time and organization, but really they are about fear and doubt. Thanks for kicking off 2009 with some encouragement and not just a sales pitch. Keep up the good work. May 2009 bring peace and prosperity to us all.

Jeremy,
Thank you for these resolutions. I think that 2009 is going to be fantastic! The most difficult thing for me is to focus. So I’ll be working on that first thing. The only other thing I want to add to your post is a quote that I have on my desk “what would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail? ” I look at it everyday and it motives me to have the courage to try to do more things.
Best wishes for a prosperous new year,

Hi,
Happy New Year Jeremy & all SFW readers!
I loved your article – and, YES (!) it got me thinking!
… or you can tell them you’re:
“Devoted to being…,
by changing habits of belief”
Think through that one for a few moments…
A few years back I read “The Greatest Networker…”, and my world was rocked profoundly – to say the least. Being in the present moment, is what it’s all about. I conclued & withdrew the above quotation from it, which has become my Life Wisdom Word, and I’ve never look back since that day.
And, I’ve slowly but surely build myself up towards my goals, one tiny, tiny jig-saw puzzle piece after the other. Patience is an essense while working on jig-saw puzzle’s, right?!
It’s also – in so many ways, about achieving the proper mindset…
If you don’t know what goals to reach for, how are you going to “get there”? Makes sense right?!
Before you begin your journey to become an “Enlightened & Successful Entrepreneur”, you need to search your attitudes to make sure you are willing to create wealth in a way that will support your inner beliefs and values.
Why?!
Some people actually believe that the accumulation of wealth is an unworthy goal. Money by itself, is neither good nor bad. It’s neutral. Money is an energy tool. Like a hammer, money can be used to build or to destroy. Understanding money, how to ethically make it, keep it, and share it adds a positive dimension to wealth.
Our lives, our relationships and our happiness improve when there is enough money. Money properly earned and combined with enlightened intentions makes the world a better place.
All great fortunes are started in someone’s imagination. Visualize your dreams and the income you desire. The bigger, the brighter, the clearer the image you are able to visualize before your open eyes – the better.
See yourself living in the home of your dreams, enjoying ideal relationships with true friends and loved ones, contributing to the world through your own unique talents and abilities. Imagine the fortune you could create and all the good it could do.
Believe In It, And You WILL See It!
One definition if insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. So unless you decide to do something different you will never ever achieve what you truly deserve.
Why?!
Simply because, if you keep doing what you are doing now, you will keep getting what you are getting now. Nothing changes if nothing changes. It’s that simple.
Success is when opportunity meets preparedness.
Open up to Life, prepare yourself for the dreams that lies ahead, and opportunities will follow!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
- and TAKE MASSIVE ACTION!
Best regards,
Hans Fredrik Halvorsen

Hi Jeremy
Great post and I for one am guilty of not taking action, I do lots of information gathering and then wait – maybe it is that fear of failure but this year I have vowed to do something proactive every day (cross at least 3 things off my veeeeeery big list).
Best wishes

Resolving to look for new opportunities is one that never ceases to surprise and delight as awareness of the abundance of assistance towards the goal opens door after door. Especially wonderful are the synchronicities–seeming co-incidences when 2 apparently unrelated events appear together–that frequently appear when staying conscious and awake to opportunities. If we track the meaning inside the synchronicities we are often tracking the path of our destiny. This year I plan to stay awake to opportunities that lead me in the direction of my goals and to track the deeper meaning of synchronicities as these appear.
Thanx for the reminder Jeremy, and to you and all your SFW members

Dear Jeremy,
Be consistent in thought, word and action will give us that what we want.
Therefore, I decide to put aside the fear that diverting my way of my goals.
Today, I bless my own thinking, because it allows me to define clearly what I want to do, what I want to know, what I want to have and what I want to be.
This in my own benefit, the benefit of those around me, for the benefit of mankind and the glory of the kingdom of heaven.
Happy New Year with blessings for you and your dear family,

Hi Jeremy
A great post, thank you! As always you are so dependable – giving us something useful and worthwhile. I started in mid October and was in a constant state of turmoil, fear and confusion! Information overload, I assume! This really brought home the things that are familiar to us, but for which there seemed no place in my busy schedule of 2008. Thanks for changing my perspective again!
Just to link up with you, I quote from Napoleon Hill:
“Most great people have attained their greatest success just one step beyond their greatest
failure.”
So, why do we fear failure? Who knows – the next great person might be posting on your blog!
Have a super 2009 – all of you!

Happy New Year, Jeremy. I have been subscribed to SFW since it began, and I have seen it grow like a tiny seed into a huge oak tree… Congratulations to you. I have also upgraded my membership twice, and I think what I have paid for SFW has been among the best money I have paid… I am not sure where I learn the things I now know about internet marketing, but it has all been worth learning and it has all helped me to also make a difference in the world for the people who learn from me.

My resolutions are to stay alive, avoid having a heart attack & reach my 80 birthday on 16/10/09 & finish my set of “Leather Instruction Manuals” which I write & sell on-line. I have 3 finished & on sale from my site, one half written & two more to start. After 3 heart attacks & 4 stents fitted in 2007 plus 1 heart attack & 1 stent fitted in 2008 I thought I might apply for the role of “The Bionic Man” when they remake the film. Seriously if I can pass on my skills as a Craftsman & supliment my pension that would satisfy me.

Happy New Year to you too Jeremy. May it be a healthy and prosperous New Year for us all. I am on my 11th day of not smoking after being a smoker for twenty five years. I had a spot of skin cancer removed off from my nose and when it was repaired the doctor told me “Absolutely No Smoking.” The cancer spot was most likely caused from too much sun exposure in my life but to continue smoking would decrease the chances of the skin graft healing. I was going to make it my New Years resolution to quit but I think I said that every year for as long as I can remember and it never works. Or should I say “I” never made it work!!! This time I had an important reason to make it work and am very proud of myself for making it even this far. It is my goal to remain smoke free and always be positive about everything in general and by the grace of God be able to tackle anything life throws my way. I wish the very best for everyone out there and if you have a resolution stick with it, and if you do not have one but want or need one, make today your day for change. Just do it !!! Thanks for allowing me to share.

Good post. Everything you have written is so true. My New Year’s resolution is to learn and apply myself to social media and all about blogging. ( I hope I said that right) I am a newbie at this and have been absolutely terrified of starting, You see I am not really much good at writing and being new I can’t really answer any questions or really join in (because of lack of knowledge).
Anyway, so here goes I have just started. One star up on the wall. Ye…ah
Thanks Jeremy.

Thanks Jeremy, I’ve always enjoyed reading uplifting information about succeeding in the journey of life. I would like to find a source of all the related products that this letter would promote and build a web business with it. Thanks again, michaelm558@aol.com

Jeremy writes
What we need to hear
About different goals
For this new year
Number One
Do not wait
Make the change
Before it’s too late
Number Two?
Act when you think
For an idea can be lost
As quick as you blink
Three is spot on
What all must hear
Rise above doubt
Conquer your fear
What about Four?
When you choose to look
New found opportunities
Will begin to cook
He ends with Five
Such wise words you know
Do all the above
And then let go!
To the success of all readers!

Yes, I agree with you, writing goals in itself a worthwhile action…is no guarantee of success alone. It is a plan of action and battling against the daily distractions that prevent you from moving forward with negative friends etc.
A half baked plan beats the person sat thinking about the best moment to making a move.

Dear Beloved Jeremy and all of your loved ones..
I know that I am late for a return to this email . It was in my extra emails that I do have 380 and each page only holds 200.. and I was getting ready to delete and get out of a lot of program’s that I really do not need to be in…
You have wrote the facts of life and before I unsubscribed from over 20 programs that were taking my money! It was neccessary to do this for in the second week of the month I was totally broke in the bank even overdrawn…. This is the first month that I have acually been able to pay for my bills and two pymt’s on my house to get caught up.. So when I get out of a few more.. I may be able to really get my goals going and that is to invest in the good programs and go for it.
Take a chance. Right…
